Just before Christmas we noticed that our 15 year old washer-dryer set-up, which had never given us any major issues, were both starting to get very "tired". The washer didn't seem to have as much "umpf" on the spin-cycle, leaving a lot of water in the clothes, and the gas dryer just couldn't seem to keep up anymore (and took forever to get anything dry). So, we decided to spend our income tax rebate a little early, and I managed for the first time in my life to snag a door-crasher High Efficiency set at Home Depot on Boxing Day. So much for my luck. The washer and dryer were a little too big, the venting had to be changed (which made them stick out farther), they needed to be stacked (so the 240v outlet for the new electric dryer needed to be moved, because the plug was too low), the stacking kits are hard to find in Canada (so I had it shipped in from the States), the cabinet had to come down ('cause we were stacking the set), etc etc. Finally, enough was enough and we hired a local builder to come in and do things "right". So tomorrow, new IKEA cabinets go in ($425..gulp), new venting, new countertop ('cause they are now being unstacked), and a few other tweaks, which are going to end up costing more $$$. By the time all of this is done, I am sure it will look lovely. I also am pretty sure that I can kiss the next few income tax rebate cheques good-bye. Don't even get me started on how I hate my kitchen...I don't even want to think about that cost...

What a pain (and a costly one at that). Hard to keep on top of the "little" fix up jobs around the house. You'll have to include the frustration of house owning with the students in your history class. As much as technology continues to help to shape the new world order, there are some constants that never change.
