History

Picture
History is the foundation of a complete education. Its subject is the human experience--at all times, in all places, in all of its dimensions: social, political, economic, cultural, and intellectual. The study of history helps us to understand our own culture and the time in which we live by acquainting us with the experience of other people in other times and places. By demanding that we seek causes, determine motivations, make comparisons, and draw conclusions, the study of history sharpens analytical skills and teaches critical thinking. It enhances our value as citizens by helping us to understand how we got to be where we are and how human beings have changed their condition.

Of all the academic disciplines that I teach, history is my passion.  My Honours Bachelor of Arts degree is in Canadian Social History.  My particular interests include World War II, Napoleonic Europe, Labour History, and the American Civil War.

My pedagogical approach is to build student-centred classrooms, where learning drives the discussion forward.  Students develop creative and critical thinking skills through simulations, role-plays, reviews, debates, discussions, and document analysis.  Technology plays a big role in my classes, and students are exposed to, taught and encouraged to use many relevant Web 2.0 technologies to communicate their research with their peers both at Grey Highlands and in the outside world.
