Canadian History in the 20th Century

Picture
Canadian history is often perceived by students as being dull and boring, lacking in the wars and the "wild West" of American history, and missing in the colourful characters of European history. But if you take the time to dig into Canada's history, you are likely to find a past that is as rich and as fascinating as any other country's.

Illuminating the past, challenging you to think critically and creatively, and building the academic and social skills necessary for future educational and career endeavours are the cornerstones of this course. Throughout the course you will be encouraged to be an active participant through debates, simulations, and role-playing. The ultimate success of the course depends on you!

This course explores the local, national, and global forces that have shaped Canada's national identity from World War I to the present. Students will investigate the challenges presented by economic, social, and technological changes and explore the contributions of individuals and groups to Canadian culture and society during this period. Students will use critical-thinking and communication skills to evaluate various interpretations of the issues and events of the period and to present their own points of view.
