Mocumentary

10/26/2020

A mockumentary (a portmanteau of the words mock and documentary) is a type of film or television show in which fictional events are presented in documentary style to create a parody. These productions are often used to analyze or comment on current events and issues by using a fictional setting, or to parody the documentary form itself.

DOCUMENTARIES

We have a lot to accomplish over the next week (our last full week together), so let's work together to make everything work smoothly.

Today we are going to be discussing the genre of documentaries (you can use this worksheet to organize your notes).

I have included the silent film classic documentary "Nanook of the North" (which was made before the term documentary was even coined). In 1989, this film was one of the first 25 films to be selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant"

Documentary Addict
is an AWESOME curated website for you to check out as we explore the craft of movie making.

You should be well past the initial stages of pre-production for your Culminating Blockbuster.  I expect to have been presented with everyone's elevator pitch by the end of tomorrow's class (why wait, let's get them done today!).

Here is the second part of your Culminating Blockbuster that covers all the expectations and rubrics for production and post-production.

Please stay focused and on task.  The time will slip by faster than  you think.

As you start to think about post-production on your movie, as few of  you are finding non-copyright materials (such as soundtracks, looped video clips, etc).

Fortunately, this tool is an excellent way to help you find the resources that you need.  Check it out (but don't trust the results 100%...make sure you check the descriptions in the files to make sure that they have a Creative Commons license).

Audio in Film

Today we are going to work on learning how to add effective audio to our film making.
To underline the importance of soundtracks in movies, watch this very famous clip minus John William's score
We are going to learn how to use Audacity (it's free if you want to download it and practice at home) to produce a soundtrack and voice dubs for a movie clip.   For today's lesson, you will need this handout and these sound files (save them to your d: drive and unzip them).

Your assignment this week is to work with Audacity and Premiere to create something that looks a little like this (minus the zombies and plus one cute bear).  The video files you need are on the class USB stick, and can be downloaded here (warning:  the file is large and will take a long time).  You can find free sound effects for your assignment at Sounddogs.

Today, we will begin the awesome journey that is your Course Culminating Movie Assignment.  While we are only 50% finished this course, you have enough experience and a large enough skill base to get started with your pre-production.  The final film will be due in the first week in November, but as you know from your first few assignments, planning, shooting and editing take a lot longer than you think.

This is the first package of handouts that you will need to Build Your Blockbuster.

Three excellent resources for you to expand your learning (and to go beyond what you have been taught in class):
IndyMogul
Vimeo FIlm School
Film Riot

You can also find downloadable assets at Detonation Films
