Let's take a little time (after we finish up the presentations) to take a look at the expectations for your portfolio.

This little booklet contains some really nifty instructions on how to take some very cool photos that will help you fulfill the requirements for your last photography assignment. Experimenting is fun...try it! (The file is in .pdf format..but it is quite large..so it might take a while to download). Are you thinking about shooting food? Watch the video below to see how the professionals do it (this might also make you rethink eating fast food at the same time...lol). Remember all those rules of composition that you learned at the start of the course? You should be pretty comfortable with them by now. So... Now is the time to break the rules! Have fun...this video should get your creative juices flowing. It's a doozy.
This is your opportunity to demonstrate everything you have learned this semester. You have choice and you have a lot of room to demonstrate your creativity. Take your time. Don't settle. Keep pushing. Do your absolute best. The Final Photography Assignment of the Year can be done (at least partially) on our field trip to the Zoo on June 1st. Permission forms will go home tomorrow, and if you could get them back by next Tuesday (at the latest) that would be super swell :) Have you forgot one or three things from the start of the course? This is an AWESOME CHEAT SHEET website...download as many of the infographics that you need to your phone, and have them at your finger tips during your next photo shoot.
![]() As we roll closer and closer to the end of the year, and our Gallery showing, take the time to get outside and take some photos. Keep practicing and building on the skill set you have been learning this semester! Need some inspiration? Check out 72 Beautiful Photographs that Express Mood or how about some really cool photos that use reflection? ![]() We are VERY fortunate to have Gwynne Dyer coming to Grey Highlands today to speak to us. As a photojournalism student this opportunity is especially relevant to you. Gwynne has worked as a freelance journalist, columnist, broadcaster and lecturer on international affairs for more than 20 years, but he was originally trained as an historian. Born in Newfoundland, he received degrees from Canadian, American and British universities, finishing with a Ph.D. in Military and Middle Eastern History from the University of London. He served in three navies and held academic appointments at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and Oxford University before launching his twice-weekly column on international affairs, which is published by over 175 papers in some 45 countries. Pretty awesome!
We are soon going to start working on our portfolios and end of year Photography Show. But before all of that can happen, you are going to work on your last design project of the year. This is an opportunity for you to show off all the skills that you have developed and honed over the last few months. I look forward to your creations.
As we have discussed in class, you will be choosing a company that you believe does a poor job of reaching their target market. Your job is to work with 1-2 of your classmates to develop a brand new marketing campaign for that company, that includes at least 2 examples of a print ad (and beyond that there are no real limits, other than "keep it appropriate for high school"). We will be brainstorming about brainstorming today, as we watch an episode of "The Pitch" to see how advertising campaigns are developed in the "real world". After we watch the episode, this handout on the 4 key questions to help frame your advertising campaign is a good place to start. You will also need this planning sheet and rubric. Today (and for the rest of the week), we will be working on our "Top Secret Assignment". Please make sure that you show me a rough draft by the end of Wednesday's class. If you are stuck for ideas, the Lookbooks on the bookshelf are great for brainstorming (you can always "borrow" elements from different types of layouts).
We will briefly look at the Elements of Design (so you can push your layouts to the "next level"), and for those that need some review, this is the PowerPoint we looked at on Thursday. Here are a few visual reminders to help keep the flash tutorials that we worked on in class in your head :) If you click on the pictures they will become larger and easier for you to read. It wouldn't be a bad idea to copy them on to your phone so that they are always handy.
This weekend will be an excellent opportunity to get outdoors and practice your photography. You should be comfortable with the technical aspects of different versions of photography, and now is the time for you to work on thinking through your compositions. Form a picture in your mind, and try to make it happen. Tell a story. Trigger an emotion.
Here are some amazing photos to inspire you. |
